Experimental research on Doppler spread of reverberation using PTFM signals

Pulse trains of frequency modulated (PTFM) signals, a kind of wideband Doppler-sensitive waveform used as transmitted signals of active sonar, can separate reverberation and moving targets by speed information. Q function deriving from the ambiguity function is a common theoretical approach used to analyze the reverberation suppression performance of waveforms. However, because of the complexity and variation of ocean or lake environment, there must be differences between experimental and theoretical Doppler spread. Despite the fact that reverberation experiments transmitting regular PTFM signals make a request for specific transducers and power amplifiers, it's necessary to investigate and modify the Q function model through experiments in order to guide the reverberation suppression of PTFM signals by quantifying the Doppler spread of reverberation. In this paper, we elaborate the experimental conditions, present an statistical method for analyzing experimental data, and obtain quantitative differences from the theoretical Q function. Finally, some suggestions are put forward about reverberation suppression using PTFM signals based on the comparison between experimental and theoretical results.
