A set of 36 ships extracted from RADARSAT-2 Moving Object Detection Experiment 1 (MODEX 1), two aperture Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) data has been used in combination with Automatic Identification System (AIS) reports to test and validate a sub-set of GMTI algorithms developed by Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC). GMTI channel balancing issues and wave induced ship motion issues are discussed. Root Mean Square (RMS) differences between Along-Track Interferometry (ATI) speed estimates and AIS vessel speed reports are shown to fall within 0.42 m/s for the worst case scene observed. Results from a multi-look direction-of-arrival (DOA) algorithm show promise for significantly improving the extraction of ship heading estimates from MODEX 1 data.
