This paper presents a methodology to identify and classify vehicles using Anisotropic Magneto-Resistive (AMR) sensors through the magnetic signature that these vehicles generate when passing over the sensors located on the ground. The work is based on simulating different vehicles ferromagnetic characteristics with a combination of magnets and positions passing over an AMR sensor, and on analyzing the characteristics of the obtained signals. A similarity measure is defined in order to compare different signals and a validation study is done using several reference configurations. The simulations and the posterior analysis show that the methodology works in a controlled scenario and the obtained results predict very positive results when these experiments are placed in a real environment.
