The City of Chelan's Don Morse Park is a 40-acre public park on the south shore of Lake Chelan in central Washington. The park provides more than 2,000 feet of shoreline public access. The City expanded the marina in 2013 by installing a new breakwater and additional moorage facilities. The City had limited funds for the project and was looking for cost-effective measures to reduce overall project costs while increasing moorage opportunities. The existing marina was expanded by removing a section of existing breakwater and expanding the marina parallel to the shoreline. In order to reduce project costs, an innovative design was implemented that used horizontal steel sheet piling bolted to vertical steel H-piling and battered pipe piling for the vertical-wall breakwater. This innovative application of a common construction material reduced the overall construction costs significantly and expedited the construction schedule to allow the park to open in time for the summer season while providing the protection needed for the marina from the high wave exposure at the site.
