Total knee arthroplasty significantly influenced gaitparameters and the variability of gait.The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of totalknee arthroplasty (TKA) on balancing ability after suddenperturbation in the early postoperative period. Balancingability after sudden perturbation was modeled by aprovocation test and characterized by the Lehr’s dampingratio during double leg and single leg stance. 10 patientsoperated on by conventional total knee arthroplasty wereinvestigated by the provocation test before TKA and 6and 12 weeks after TKA and their results were comparedwith the results of 20 healthy elderly subjects. The resultsof testing during stance on the affected limb in patientsdiffered significantly from the results of standing on bothlimbs and on the unaffected limb in the earlypostoperative period. These results indicated that TKAsignificantly decreased balancing ability on the affectedside after sudden perturbation. Our results showed that 12weeks after TKA, balancing ability after suddenperturbation improved compared to the results prior tosurgery, although it did not return to normal.Deterioration in balancing ability after suddenperturbation can increase the risk of falling.
