This paper proposes a permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMASynRM) with ferrite magnets that does not use rare earth materials. The performance of the proposed PMASynRM is evaluated based on FEA and experiments. The results indicate that the proposed PMASynRM has a high power density. Moreover, the structures of the flux barriers and the combination of rotors can be varied to improve the torque characteristics in order to achieve greater torque and a lower torque ripple ratio. These methods are effective under flux weakening control.
