A Two-Port Dual-Polarized Ring Antenna For Massive MIMO

In this paper, a novel design for a two-port dual-polarized ring antenna element is proposed. The antenna consists of a printed ring fed through commonly driven sets of two vertical and two horizontal slots. The input power of the feeding ports is split equally among the vertical/horizontal slots of the ring antenna by means of a 3-dB Wilkinson power divider. The dual-polarized ring antenna element exhibits horizontally and vertically polarized broadside radiation corresponding to the excitation of the respective horizontal and vertical slots. Measured results show that the proposed dual-polarized ring antenna exhibits an impedance bandwidth of 190 MHz (1.76-1.95 GHz). Furthermore, the mutual coupling between the ports is less than -30 dB. The proposed dual-polarized ring antenna can be a good candidate for use as an antenna element in the massive MIMO antenna array system for 5G applications.
