Calcium phosphate coating on metal implants is an effective method to improve the bioactive properties of the metallic surfaces. In the present study is examined the characteristics of hydroxyapatite coatings deposited on an alkali-treated titanium substrate by biomimetic method in a supersaturated calcium solution (SCS). The samples were treated in a 10 mol/l NaOH solution for 24 h at 60 °C and subsequently immersed in a SCS solution during 24 h. The treated surfaces and the coatings obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that a laminar coating of hydroxyapatite had formed on pre-treated titanium substrate. Therefore, a NaOH pre-treatment is recommended as an effective method for preparing a bioactive calcium phosphate coating.
