In this paper, we intend to perform a simulation of the variable speed electric drive of a beam pumping unit, in which an asynchronous machine is powered through a frequency converter and is controlled by the Direct Torque Control technique. In the upward stroke of the pumping cycle, the asynchronous machine operates in motor regime and in the downward stroke it works in generator mode, which can be considered a braking regime The purpose of the simulation is to carry out an analysis of the variation of the main energy parameters when the electric drive operates at different frequencies. The results obtained for a specific pumping unit, however, have a high degree of validity also for other models of extraction equipment in Canadian version, which do not bring any essential changes in the modelling of the system.
