The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, it explores the relationship between gender grouping in small group work in design-based science (DBS) in high school biology and female students' engagement and achievement in both biology and engineering. Second, it presents a mixed methods approach to video data analysis by introducing how the researchers analyzed student engagement in the engineering design process by integrating a quantitative data analysis technique called sequence analysis and a qualitative data analysis technique called elaborated running records.
