Modular Multi-level Converter (M2LC) has become increasingly attractive topology for various medium to high voltage applications. However, in comparison with other multilevel converters, circulating currents that are inherent to M2LCs increase the converter losses and complexity of the control scheme. A modified M2LC topology, based on Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) technology, has been proposed to maintain the capacitor voltage of each module within a narrow band around the nominal value to minimize circulating currents. This paper presents a mathematical model for the M2LC-IPT topology to predict the dynamic behavior of the converter. The validity of the mathematical model is verified by comparing theoretical results with simulations of a three-phase three-level 2-kVA grid connected M2LC-IPT system.
