A field experiment was conducted on farmers field at Vuyyuru, Krishna Distt. during the year 2003 06 on clay loam soils in sugarcane plant and ratoon crops to study the effect of alkali soils and their reclamation methods on yield, quality and physicb -chemical properties of soils. The treatments include application of gypsum, pressmud cake a sugar industry byproduct, FYM, ZnSO_4, and combination of all these organic amendments with recommended dose of fertilizers. The results revealed that the application of organic amendments increased the cane yield to an extent of 21% in plant crop and 12% in ratoon crop when compared to the application of inorganic fertilizers alone which recorded the lowest cane yield and the improvement in soil conditions are also less The improvement in cane yield and on soil properties may be due to the application of combination of organic amendments which decreased the concentration of sodium ions. The quality parameters like juice pH, juice sucrose, CCS%, juice purity and total soluble solids were also maximum with the application of organic amendments to the extent of 31%, 12% 15% in plant crop and 22%, 11.5%, 9% in ratoon crop respectively while it was observed to be low where inorganic fertilizers were applied. The uptake of nutrient were also maximum with the application of organic amendments on alkali soils while the lowest uptake was recorded with control where inorganic fertilizers were applied.
