Silica Sand is the most essential raw material and its importance is sometimes forgotten among foundry people. An important part of Silica sand is fines. These are formed by very small particles that include clays and dust; these components will affect the compaction and final strength of the cores formed. The objective of this paper is to clarify the concept about the fines and show their influence on the mechanical properties of mixtures using the same content of binder and different percentages of fines. A practical application of these concepts can help to establish the limits on the use of fines in the resin-sand mixtures in order to maintain the optimal tensile strengths to get sand cores with the enough resistance to produce good quality aluminum castings.
