LIVABLE CENTERS IN THE GREATER HOUSTON REGION - PLANNING TOOLS TO MEASURE BENEFITS

The greater Houston region, the fifth largest metro region in the U.S., is projected to grow by anadditional 3.5 million people by the year 2040. Strategies to effectively coordinatetransportation and land use, and to measure the benefits of doing so, are actively needed by theHouston region as well as other growing regions of the nation.Without coordination of transportation and land use, traffic growth will overburden the regionaltransportation system. Houston-Galveston Area Council's Livable Centers Program is onestrategy being explored in the Houston region to address these challenges. Livable Centers aresafe, convenient, and attractive areas where people can live, work and play.This paper addresses several areas: the need for Livable Centers, research/innovative approachesto demonstrate benefits of the Livable Centers approach including a density/benefits calculator,and areas for partnership.
