Vehicle detection has the potential to improve how drivers interact with change intervals tominimize the potential hazards associated with dilemma zones at signalized intersections. Thedilemma zone described extensively throughout the literature refers to the area where driversexperience difficulty with stop/go decision making when presented a circular yellow indication.Incorrect decisions lead to increased rear end crashes and more severe angle crashes. To evaluatethe potential for a particular configuration of point or space sensors to mitigate the influence ofdilemma zones on safety, observations were made at a high-speed signalized intersectionproviding advanced vehicle detection under both point and space sensor detection. Resultsshowed that the application of space sensors reduced dilemma zone incursions by presenting theyellow indication to drivers downstream of the dilemma zone where the stop/go decision is moreeasily made by drivers.
