ASSESSMENT OF LABOR BASED CONSTRUCTION METHODS IN EGYPTIAN RURAL ROADS

Present road condition is in general highly capital intensive. In recent years, the application oflabor-based methods in local rural roads construction has been initiated due to its social andeconomic efforts in target locations. The main goal of using such techniques in local rural roadconstruction is to improve the living standard of the target groups in local villages and to create alarge number of job opportunitiesHowever, there are inevitable doubts, especially among engineers and project planners, as to thefeasibility of the labor-based methods; whether it would be possible to apply these methodswithout sacrificing quality standards, what effect they might have on the pace of construction,what additional strains they might place on scarce managerial resources, and of course, what thecomparative cost would be.The present study is concerned with the relationship between the creations of employmentopportunities and choice of technology in the rural road construction sector. The studyinvestigates the present rural road construction technology and the economic and technicalfeasibility of the labor-based methods of local rural road construction. In addition the study carryout a case study of local rural that were constructed through the use of labor-based methods indifferent Egyptian governorates.The study concluded with a descriptive methodology of the different project phases; selection,planning, design, and implementation of labor-based rural road construction, and suggest how farlabor-based techniques can be used to substitute equipment in this sector.
