Ogallala Aquifer Boundary 2010

The largest aquifer in the United States, The Ogallala Aquifer, spans approximately 175,000 square miles through eight states. The aquifer is depicted in blue hues and elevation of the land mass is shown in meters. Due to the quick decrease in elevation, just east of the Rocky Mountains into the semi-arid Great Plains region, there is very little recharge of the aquifer. Used mainly for crop lirrigation, the aquifer is being depleted faster than the hydrologic cycle can renew this valuable, finite resource.
