Polycarbonate (PC) is an amorphous thermoplastic material featuring a high mechanical stability over a broad temperature range. It is weather- and aging-resistant and has a high thermal resistance. PC is used as high-strength technical parts, medical devices, dishes, etc. Due to the chemical structure (aromatic components), numerous toxic compounds are formed during pyrolysis. The pyrolysis gases formed were identified by means of TGA-MS, TGA-FTIR, and TGA-GC-MS. Here, the TGA-GC-MS coupling features clear advantages in the identification of the gases due to the previous separation of the gases by means of the GC prior to the actual identification with the mass spectrometer. In this paper, the different coupling types will be presented and the resulting pyrolysis gases will be discussed.
