A novel outdoor monitoring system for PV modules has been developed, where custom designed DCDCconverters enable continuous maximum power point tracking with simultaneous current, voltage and temperaturemonitoring of each PV module in the system. Besides MPP each PV module can be set in any operational regimeincluding short- circuit or open-circuit. Three CIGS and three multi-crystalline silicon PV modules have been monitoredfor six months from April this year in all three regimes. Their module-to-ambient temperature difference is linearlydependent of in–plane irradiance showing different in different operation regimes. The slope variation agrees well tolinear energy balance model, which predicts highest slope in OC conditions and lowest in MPP, where maximal power isextracted from the PV modules. Slope in SC conditions is close to the slope in OC conditions, where the small differencecan be attributed to the power that dissipates on the series resistance and external resistance due to non-ideal short circuitconditions.
