Distributed generations of renewable energies, such as PV generation, are significant resources in apower system. To have higher power quality of power supply, multi-lever inverter is often employed for the powerconversion. This paper presents a new self-balancing five-level inverter, which comprises two auxiliary circuits and afull-bridge inverter. The two conducting paths are used to alternately discharge the two input DC capacitors. Therefore, the unbalanced DC voltage that often occurs in the conventional five-level inverter is avoided. Throughthe balancing control, the proposed inverter offers a near perfect output current to supply the load, and the size of theproposed system can be reduced due to smaller capacitances and inductances needed. A 400W, 200V input-voltage,110VAC output-voltage prototype circuit is implemented to verify the performance of the proposed self-balancingfive-level inverter.
