The genomes of eukaryotic cells are constantly subjected to numerous forms of DNA damage. Upon DNA damage, cells initiate the DNA damage checkpoint response which controls cell cycle progression. This signal pathway is essential to preventing genomic instability which results in cancer development. ATR (Ataxia telangiectasia mutated and Rad3 related) is a member of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-related protein kinases (PIKKs) and a key regulator of the checkpoint response to various forms of damaged DNA, including UV-induced DNA damage.
