GASIFICATION OF FEATHERS FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION - A CASE STUDY

Efficiency analysis of the industrial gasification plant utilising turkey and chicken feathers is presented.The installation uses wet turkey feathers as raw material for gasification. The produced syngas is combusted in acombustion chamber, and the generated heat is recovered in a boiler producing technological steam. The flue gassatisfies stringent emission standards for waste material combustion. The installation utilizes about10 000 tons of feathers per year and is an example of a novel approach to using a hard-to-utilize animal by-productfor energy production. Performance and efficiency parameters of the installation are shown for one week. Mass andenergy flows are calculated and the overall efficiency of the installation is evaluated. The efficiencies of particularapparatus comprising the installation are presented. The environmental impact of this installation during the analysedweek is also considered. The measurements of the streams of pollutants are summarised.
