In recent years, many serious failures were occurred in different aspects of GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) equipments. These failures would bring out hidden dangers and instable factors to the power system. In this paper, the operation status and typical failures of GIS equipment were systematically summarized, most of which were mainly caused by inadequate control of manufacturing process and installation. To diagnose the status of GIS equipments more accurately, a new experiment program composed of acceptance trial and UHF partial discharge testing technique was proposed. Proved by actual test examples, this method could effectively eliminate interference from environmental noise, indicate sophisticated test program, and diagnose the existence of hidden internal defects, which could make up for the lack of the traditional acceptance trial.
