Counting cyclists - fostering a bike friendly public governance

The German city of Bremen actively promotes cycling as a clean and healthy way oftransportation. The creation of a vast network of cycle lanes and paths over the past decadeshas lead to a good infrastructure. The further extension of this network will require more andmore to re-allocate road space, thus entering a confrontation with car drivers and their lobby.In order to re-assess the importance of cycling the classical surveys do not deliver sufficientdata because they only give data for a limited time. Similar to the motorised traffic beingcounted at numerous locations all across the road network, there is a need for a continuousdata collection and monitoring. Given the growing importance of sustainable transport modes,this task is addressed by Bremen’s traffic management centre.
