A Progression Index for Signalized Intersections to Represent Real Progression with Considering Queue Clearance Time

This paper aims to develop a performance index to represent real progression. We define realprogression as unnecessary waiting time at the signalized intersection. In order to be able togo through the traffic light without unnecessary traffic delays, we mainly optimize the signalvariable with a progression model as like PASSER or PROS of Transyt-7F. These models usea distance between intersections and vehicle speed to get signal control variables. It isdifficult to apply the influence of traffic flow as like residual queues and various trafficdemands. We design a performance index to be able to reflect the effect of traffic conditionsand to estimate the quality of real progression. We form a progression index with shock wavetheory in order to observe the variation by various traffic demands and to consider residualqueue time. We obtain each cell density on cell transmission model and calculate travel timeby assuming vehicle trajectory. We can estimate delay time and the quality of real progressionwhen simulate by changing offset. We compare a progression index to signal optimizationmodel.
