In this study we test flat electron-excited phosphor luminescent lamps which are different from the traditional discharge lamps as they operate under high voltage and low pressure (near the regime of Townsend discharge). These lamps do not employ mercury as the active medium making them a candidate for future green backlight sources. The spectral and electrical characteristics of the lamps are explored in order to find out the optimum working conditions.
