An experimental program was carried out to study the seismic behaviors and failure mechanism of steel vierendeel staggered truss structure. Based on test results, the seismic behaviors of the steel vierendeel staggered truss structure were evaluated through its hysteretic behavior, ductility, energy dissipation and rigidity degeneration, etc. It revealed that the steel vierendeel staggered truss structures had the advantages in bearing capacity, ductility, deformability and energy dissipation, but poor in its lateral rigidity which was weak and distributed non-uniform along its vertical layout. The stress measurement showed that the plastic hinges formed in the web members of the truss firstly, then, in the chord members of the truss, and finally formed in the lower end of the bottom column, earthquake energy mostly dissipated by the truss members, the failure mechanism of the vierendeel staggered truss steel structures was belong to the beam hinges failure mechanism, which meet the requirements of current code for seismic design of buildings.
