Reinforced concrete(RC)shear walls have been widely used in tall buildings constructed in seismic regions due to their high lateral stiffness and strength.During the past strong earthquakes,in some tall buildings RC shear walls suffered severe damages that concentrated at the bottom,including the crushing and spalling of concrete,and the buckling or fracture of longitudinal reinforcement at the two bottom corners.Such kind of damage is generally very difficult to be repaired,or the cost of repair is very high.The installation of replaceable energy-dissipation components at the bottom corners of the shear wall is a good method to retrofit and restore the function of shear walls quickly by replacing the replaceable components after earthquake.In this study,the RC shear wall with a new kind of replaceable corner component is put forward.The constructional details and design method of the new shear wall are developed.A design example is provided for illustration.Finally,the pushover analysis using commercial software ABAQUAS is carried out for the new shear wall with replaceable corner components and the ordinary RC shear wall.The responses and the damage process are compared.The results show that the lateral stiffness and loading carry capacity of the new shear wall is similar to that of the ordinary shear wall,but the ductility of the new shear wall is enhanced significantly.For the new shear wall,the damage mainly concentrates at the replaceable components,and little damage occurs in other part.The concept of the new shear wall with replaceable corner components is verified by the case study.It could be regarded as an earthquake resilient structure.
