Analysis of the Impact of Origin-Destination Distance on Travel Time Reliability under Traffic Incident Conditions

The occurrence of freeway traffic incidents usually leads to serious traffic congestion. Travel time can be used to estimate the location, duration, and influence of traffic incidents occurring on a freeway network. However, the reliability of travel time can be weakened if the travel distance increases even though no incidents occur. Therefore, it is necessary to know how far travel distance can impact travel time reliability in occurrences of freeway incidents. In this paper, detailed incident information, including occurrence time, location, and impair severity, was acquired for Shaanxi, China, and vehicle toll data were collected for the regional freeway network and applied to calculate travel time between pairs of origins-destinations (OD). A statistical distribution was selected according to travel time data for which the dependent relationship between the distribution parameters and several possible influential factors can be inferred. The results of this study can help freeway administrators develop appropriate traffic control measures for incidents and provide guidance information for travelers.
