Snowfall Impact on Travel Mode Choices

Snowfall has great effects on traveler behavior, especially for northern cities in China. This study constructed a nested logit model to assess the traffic mode choice behavior of residents under different weather conditions among four traffic modes: bus, metro, taxi, and car. 300 residents' choice data were collected in a stated preference survey. Impacts of various factors on traffic mode choices were explored by the model. It showed that travel time and in-carriage congestion had greater impact on travelers' choice behavior. Travel cost had few impacts than what we imagined. Through the comparisons of choice behavior between sunny and snowy days, it appeared that the share rates of these four modes changed significantly. Results showed that the share rate of metro and taxi would increase on snowy days, while that of the other two modes would decrease accordingly. Meanwhile, it showed that 67% of the people switched their modes on snowy days.
