Natural and synthetic biomaterials are therapeutically used in medical and surgical procedures to repair, restore or replace lost function of human tissue. While such materials have been around for decades, continuous improvements based on the understanding of how the body interacts with implanted materials has lead to the development of materials which are more biocompatible. In this study, we report a new method for preparation of regenerative tissue scaffolds consisting of combining a porcine acellular tissue matrix (pATM) together with various synthetic polymers. The method consists of dissolving the desired polymer in a suitable solvent, mixing the polymer solution with particulate pATM, and molding the mixture into a stable form through a freeze dry process. When tested in an in vivo model of biocompatibility, the pATM-polymer scaffolds were found to elicit an attenuated inflammatory response as compared to polymeric scaffolds created in the absence of the pADM component.
