The present data show for the first time that two distinct functional domains from animal collagen-like sequences can be introduced into the 'blank slate' of Scl2 bacterial collagen. This shows the potential for readily producing in E. coli a range of designed, stable, triple-helical proteins that carry specified binding functions, for use, for example, as tissue engineering scaffolds or in specific clinical applications such as cartilage or wound repair.
