The understanding of the mechanisms regulating precursor cell differentiation along a certain cell lineage is absolutely crucial for tissue repair and will greatly improve our ability to use stem cells for tissue repair. We discovered a novel factor (ANK) and a novel mechanism regulating Wnt/-catenin signaling and, ultimately differentiation of precursor cells along the chondro- and osseous lineages. The understanding of the role of these novel factors and the mechanisms regulating precursor cell differentiation along the chondro- and osseous lineages will provide novel treatment options for musculoskeletal tissue repair.
