It has been found that the use of AuNPs for localized gene delivery systems can lead to prolonged and increased transfection activity while maintaining relatively low cytotoxicity levels in vitro. Additionally, when using nanoparticles as a DNA delivery vehicle, it has been found that the hydrodynamic radius of the particle plays a strong role in the ability to functionalize the particle surface using the LbL technique.
