HTGR MEASUREMENTS AND INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEMS

An integrated overview of measurements and instrumentation for near-term future high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) is presented. Measurement and communications needs of HTGRs are described for normal operations, diagnostics, and accident response. The combination of modern communications technologies and HTGR requirements may result in a distinctive instrumentation architecture. New and emerging measurement technologies have high potential to improve operations, maintenance, and accident response for modular HTGRs with their high degree of passive safety. Special focus is devoted to describing the failure modes of the measurement technologies and assessing the technology maturity.
