EPRI Report 1022991, published in 2011, provides focused guidance for implementing configuration management for digital I&C equipment and systems. It addresses both software and hardware issues. Best practices and effective methods are identified and developed into practical guidance for owner/operator engineers and their contractors. This report identifies the requirements, explains the issues and options, and provides 27 examples of methods, good practices, and lessons-learned, including detailed guidance that can be used by owner/operator engineers in developing procedures. The fundamental concept of "Digital Configuration Management" (Digital CM) is basically an expansion of the approach described for Software Configuration Management in various industry standards. Software configuration management, by definition, applies to software. However, digital systems and components are made up of more than software configuration items - they include hardware items, configuration data items, document and media items, setpoints, tunable parameters, end user parameters, and other items of interest. This guidance addresses the finer points of digital CM, including methods for identifying hardware and software configuration items, controlling application logic, controlling configuration data, and optimizing and controlling documentation. The guidance complements existing methods for plant configuration management, design control, document control, parts control, and other Appendix B program criteria.
