@@Polystyrene has been widely used in many areas because of its good mechanical properties and chemical resistance; however, the inherent flammability cannot meet application requirements in many cases. Formation of charred residue is considered as an effective way to improve thermal stability and fire retardancy. Recently, Lewis acids such as transition metal chlorides (e.g. ferric chloride, nickel chloride etc.) were used to promote char formation of polymers in a few reports m. Lewis acids transition metal chlorides (LACs) may change degradation mechanism of polymer and increase char formation at a high temperature. For example, LACs can act effectively as crosslinking catalysts which make unsaturated sites crosslinked, and eventual graphitization can be formed.
