The development and use of a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy sensor for application in a hydrogen-fueled model scramjet combustor is presented. Absorption transitions are selected from the 1.4 um band of water transitions to make use of telecommunications diode laser technology to detect combustion products. Scanned wavelength-modulation spectroscopy with second-harmonic detection is used for its superior noise-rejection capabilities. The sensor measures temperature and H2O column density at three axial planes downstream of fuel injection with the absorption lines-of-sight positioned at over 60 measurement locations using a translation stage system. Resulting plots show the evolution of temperature and combustion products throughout a scramjet combustor.
