The authors have carried out two-dimensional numerical analyses of traveling wave type direct energy converter (TWDEC) for a D-~3He fusion reactor considering connection with cusp type direct energy converter (Cusp DEC), and studied the behavior of TWDEC. Following results have been found out (1) The protons move in spiral due to the Lorentz force between the magnetic field and vertical velocity of proton. (2) Increasing the magnetic flux density can reduce the energy loss caused by the collision with grids, and the efficiency increases of the efficiency approaching 60 %. (3) The Helmholtz coil forms a non-uniform magnetic field in TWDEC, causing reduction of efficiency. (4) By placing the modulator behind the mirror magnetic field that is formed due to the Helmholtz coil, the energy conversion efficiency becomes 24.24%. (5) The performance of both direct energy converters is improved by reviewing the design of the Helmholtz coils, leading to the efficiency of 68.97 % for Cusp DEC and 48.01 % for TWDEC.
