Surfactant leaching is a global issue for which customers have historically sought improvements in architectural coatings. Surfactant leaching is the efflux of water-soluble species from the paint film resulting in an unwanted change of visual appearance of the coating. Many factors contribute to surfactant leaching, both intrinsic to the binder and unique to the formulation, as well as environmental factors and various combinations within these broader categories. This paper focuses on the factors influencing surfactant leaching, mechanisms, and proposed solutions to improve resistance to surfactant leaching.
