Surfactants for Use as Codispersants in Architectural Coatings

The preparation of pigment grinds for Architectural Coatings utilizes high shear dispersion techniques in combination with low molecular weight polymeric dispersants. The selection of a grind dispersant is critical for optimum dispersion properties including viscosity, stability and handling as well as the final coating hiding and characteristics. Surfactants can be used as co-dispersants to improve grind efficiency and properties. Surfactant usage in conjunction with dispersants is investigated to identify functionality and combinations to improve efficiency and coating properties.
