The Water Framework Directive has established a consistent mechanism across member statues of the European Union for the management of the water environment, including estuaries and coasts. The Water Framework Directive w,as adopted by the European Commission in December 2000. The directive aims to reduce pollution, mitigate the effects of floods and droughts, and promote sustainable development through monitoring and managing impacts on aquatic ecology.
