Polyurethane is a new binding material for bonded revetments in coastal engineering. It opens a new range of applications and possibilities for dike protection. Successful tests in several prototypes and laboratory show that the new material looks promising in terms of technical properties, mechanical behaviour and effects on the environment. The combination of high strength, natural appearance and ecological recovery make polyurethane bonded revetments (PB A-revetments) an attractive alternative for existing types of revetments such as open stone asphalt. Development of design rules and construction guidelines is currently in progress and a design manual for PBA-revetments is due later in 2009.
