A rock and a hard place: managing coastal erosion risk at Trow Quarry, South Shields

The Trow Quarry coastal defence scheme shows how, through a successful partnership approach involving appropriate organisations, each with a commitment to deliver, a scheme can successfully be developed to protect and enhance the environment from an initial problem, through an appraisal process and detailed design and assessment, to implementation within a 3-year period. This has been possible because of the pragmatic and proportionate response that solves the immediate risks posed by coastal erosion, but one that can be adapted in the future as appropriate, contingent upon the findings of longer-term monitoring and improved understanding of present-day uncertainties.
