Catalpa bungei C. A. Mey. is one kind of traditional planting and rare timber materials, and its trunk part is mainly used for the industry of timber processing. The lop wood of Catalpa bungei Q. A. Mey. may be used as one kind of new fiber sources. In this study, the chemical components and the sodaanthraquinone (AQ) semi-chemical pulping properties of three different clone Catalpa bungei C. A. Mey. lop woods with two different diameters were determined. The results show that the lop wood with big diameter has lower contents of 1% NaOH extractive and alcohol-benzene solubles than the lop wood with small diameter. The Klason lignin content of lop wood of 8401 is higher than others, and the content of acid soluble lignin is quite similar for these six samples. The optimum alkali pretreatment for the lop woods with big diameter and small diameter is 11% NaOH and 0.1% AQ. The pulp yield of the lop wood with big diameter is better than that of the lop wood with small diameter (55%~60% vs. 50%~56%); the kappa number is about 170-180. The physical properties of lop wood with big diameter are better than that of the lop wood with small diameter, especially for the semi-chemical pulp of lop wood of 8402.
