IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO: IMPACT OF SOCIAL CAPITAL ON SUPPLY CHAIN COLLABORATION

Many organizations have shown interest in developing collaborative arrangements with their supply chain partners. To develop and facilitate these, organizations could use social mechanisms and relationships. However, there is some reticence to use social capital for this purpose because of doubts about its effectiveness. In this paper, we argue that social capital can be a useful way to develop supply chain collaboration. We use social capital theory and associated frameworks, and empirical data from fifty collaborative dyads to show that social capital influences collaborative outcomes directly, and through resources that are exchanged between collaborating partners. These results show that social capital can be a useful way to foster collaborative arrangements between supply chain partners.
