IMPROVING THE SAFETY OF MOBILE LANE CLOSURES – RECOMMENDED STANDARDS

Mobile lane closures are an increasingly utilized and potentially hazardous traffic control procedure forhighway maintenance and operations activities. To improve their safety Applied Research Associates,Inc. (ARA) investigated driver behavior in and around mobile closures and the effect of different trafficcontrol components such as the number, configuration, and spacing of shadow vehicles and various trafficcontrol devices. Phase I field test findings were reported previously. This report presents our Phase IIefforts, including a summary of industry feedback and input, factors considered in standard development,an analysis of critical lane closure components, and recommendations for revisions to traffic controlstandards to improve the safety of mobile lane closures for workers and motorists.
