Residential location studies employing discrete choice models dominate in housing research.Relatively little is known about how people search. And yet, insights from understanding howpeople search can potentially improve the residential location models by providing a morerealistic way to generate individual choice sets. In this paper, using the data from over twohundred face-to-face interviews conducted in the New York City region, we examine the role ofintra-household dynamics and the dynamics played out during the sequential moves of a search. Our results verify the role of intra-household dynamics. In addition, renters appear to follow amore consistent spatial pattern than buyers.
