Highway Construction Productivity Measurement using a Wireless Real–Time Productivity Measurement System

To improve the quality of construction schedules, there is a need to develop an advancedproductivity measurement system. Existing on-site construction productivity measurementmethods have some common limitations, such as not providing data necessary for engineers andproject managers to conduct real-time analyses and share data with other project participants. Toaddress these shortfalls, a wireless real-time productivity measurement system was developed.The field experiment was conducted at two different stages: asphalt paving projects includingHMA and HIR, and a bridge reconstruction project. Productivity data collected from the WRITESystem were also compared with productivity data collected from construction documents, suchas contractor’s daily logs and pay estimate documents, to identify the feasibility of this systemfor measuring the performance of construction projects. For data analyses, statistical methodssuch as normality test, paired t-test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank test were employed. The resultof statistical analyses proved that the developed system generated identical productivitymeasurements compared to the stopwatch method and construction documents. The success ofthis research project made several major contributions to the advancement of the constructionindustry. First, it advanced the application of wireless technology in highway constructionoperations. Second, it provided an advanced technology for engineers and project managers todetermine productivity in real-time. Third, productivity data among project participants can beshared via the Internet. With these advancements, communication and coordination will beimproved at the construction site. Consequently, the WRITE System will enhance the ownersand contractors’ capability of managing construction projects.
