This paper presents chemical and rheological characterization of bio-binder producedfrom swine manure. A hydrothermal process was used to convert swine manure to a biooil.The bio-oil was fractionated to extract water, solid residue and some of the organiccompounds. The sticky residue after fractionation was used as a replacement for asphaltbinder. This paper presents production as well as chemical and rheologicalcharacterization of the bio-binder as compared with petroleum-asphalt binder. Biobinderfrom swine manure found to be a promising candidate for partial replacement forpetroleum-asphalt binder. Considering the increasing demand for asphalt binder forinfrastructure rehabilitation and the limitations imposed on growth of swine farms bymanure management practices and environmental regulations, this sustainabledevelopment will result in major improvements in environmental and economical impactsin both highway industry and the agricultural sector. Hence, this project offers a uniqueapproach that simultaneously addresses the increased depletion of petroleum resourcesthe growing swine manure pollution and released greenhouse gases, and the developmentof sustainable alternative for petroleum asphalt.The use of bio-binder will improve petroleum-asphalt binder's low temperatureproperties while reducing asphalt pavement construction costs; the cost of bio-binderproduction is estimated to be $0.54/gallon while that of asphalt binder is $2/gallon.
